Implant Documentation: What You Should Receive Before Surgery
Before a procedure that uses an implant — a knee replacement, a cardiac stent, a valve — you are entitled to know what will go into your body. Here is what to ask for and why.

Before a procedure using an implant, you are entitled to know what will go into your body — and to receive documentation of it when you leave.
What to ask before you accept an estimate
- Which implant or device is included in this estimate, and at what brand or quality level?
- Does the estimate assume a standard implant, and what does an upgrade cost, if chosen?
- What documentation of the implant will the hospital provide — at what stages?
What to ask before surgery
- Confirm the intended implant and why that choice fits your case.
- Ask whether any alternatives exist and how they differ in cost and evidence.
- Ask what paperwork you will receive at discharge confirming what was implanted, where it came from, and any appropriate regulatory or quality documentation.
Why documentation matters when you travel home
When you return home — whether to Bangladesh, Kenya, Australia or New Zealand — your local doctor may ask what was implanted, especially for follow-up care or any future procedure. Written confirmation of the implant, its type and brand is part of your medical record, and patients in several markets specifically ask for it. The Kenya corridor guide covers the same theme: ask, and get the documentation in writing.
Cost context: implant caps in India
Knee implant prices in India have been capped since 2017 by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, which is one reason Indian totals sit below Western figures. The cap applies to the implant, not to hospital stay, surgeon fees or rehabilitation — the full breakdown is in the cost roundup.
Asking for implant documentation is a normal, reasonable question for any hospital. Medical decisions, including whether surgery is appropriate for you, are made by qualified clinicians after reviewing your case.
What implant information should a hospital give me before surgery?
The type and brand of implant intended for your procedure, why that choice was made, any options available, and what documentation the hospital will give you after surgery confirming what was implanted.
Can I ask for the implant's certificate or source documentation?
Yes. Patients in several markets ask hospitals for documentation of the implant used, where it came from and its regulatory or quality certificates. Ask before surgery what paperwork will be provided, and at discharge what you receive.
Why is implant documentation important for patients travelling home?
When you return home, your local doctor may ask what was implanted — especially for follow-up care or future procedures. Written documentation of the implant is part of your medical record.
Are implant prices capped in India?
Knee implant prices have been capped in India since 2017 by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority. The cap applies to implants, not to hospital stay, surgeon fees or rehabilitation.
When should I ask for implant details?
Before you accept an estimate, ask what implant is included and its brand. Before surgery, confirm what will be implanted and what documentation you receive at discharge. Both are reasonable questions.
