Treatment in India from Kenya: Visa, Costs and Steps

A practical guide for patients and families in Kenya weighing treatment in Hyderabad — the visa route, what the Ministry of Health expects, what published prices look like in USD, and how follow-up works once you are home.

Kenyan patients need a medical visa before travelling to India for treatment, and most journeys begin with a records review rather than a booking. Check the Ministry of Health's treatment-abroad guidance, get written insurance approval if a payer is involved, then prepare your passport, reports, imaging and medicine list for a hospital estimate.

Step by step: from Kenya to a hospital in India

  1. 1Check official guidance first. The Kenyan Ministry of Health publishes current guidance on getting treatment abroad. Read it before making any non-refundable payment.
  2. 2Settle the payer question in writing. If insurance or another payer is involved, obtain written approval and confirm what it covers — pre-approval, exclusions and payment limits.
  3. 3Start with a question, then share records. Send consultation notes, imaging discs or uploads, test results and your current medicine list. Hospitals respond to cases that arrive complete.
  4. 4Read the hospital response. Ask what the hospital can assess remotely and what needs an in-person visit, and ask for the estimate in writing.
  5. 5Apply for the medical visa. Use the official Government of India visa portal, separately for the patient and any attendant. A hospital invitation letter is not visa approval.
  6. 6Plan the stay and the return. Confirm how many days the surgical team expects you in Hyderabad, where an attendant will stay, and how cardiology, physiotherapy or other follow-up will work back in Kenya.

Where a hospital reviews your case, the number that matters is that hospital's own written estimate. Our knee replacement cost statistics page lists every published figure with its source.

Insurance and Ministry guidance

Requirements and health-financing arrangements change, so treat the official Ministry guidance as the reference rather than a forwarded message. Where insurance or another payer is involved, three things need to be in writing before you commit:

Documents worth preparing

Share copies first. Anyone demanding originals or full payment before a case review is a warning sign.

Follow-up care back in Kenya

Agree the follow-up plan before you travel. Use the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council official registers to check practitioners and licensed facilities for physiotherapy, cardiology or orthopaedic review at home, and ask the Indian hospital for discharge records, a written handover and a medicine plan before you fly.

Choosing a facilitator: what to check

IndiaBridge Health is an independent coordinator based in Hyderabad. We are not a hospital and we claim no exclusive representation of any hospital. Our Kenya pathway page explains the process, with focused guides for knee replacement and heart surgery.

Sources and method

Price figures below are published ranges gathered on 8 October 2026 from the pages listed here. They are market references, not quotes. A hospital estimate for your case may fall outside any published range.

Visa rules, insurance schemes and hospital requirements change. Confirm current requirements with the official authorities and the receiving hospital. Medical decisions, including whether surgery is appropriate for you, are made by qualified clinicians after reviewing your case.

FAQ

Common questions

Do Kenyan patients need a visa for treatment in India?

Yes. Patients travelling for treatment generally need a medical visa, and most use the official Government of India e-visa route. Apply through the official portal well before travel, confirm requirements separately for the patient and any attendant, and remember that a hospital invitation letter is not visa approval.

What does Kenya's Ministry of Health expect for treatment abroad?

The Ministry publishes current guidance on getting treatment abroad, and requirements and health-financing arrangements change. Check the official Ministry guidance and, where insurance or another payer is involved, obtain written approval and confirm what it covers — pre-approval, exclusions and payment limits — before committing.

How much does treatment in India cost for Kenyan patients?

Published figures put total knee replacement in India at about USD 4,000 to 8,000, coronary bypass around USD 5,200 and angioplasty around USD 3,300. Platform averages for a single knee run about USD 4,500 to 6,200. These are market references; a hospital that reviews your case provides its own estimate.

How long should I stay in Hyderabad before flying back to Kenya?

Ask the treating surgeon to plan your stay, rehabilitation and fitness to fly, and confirm airline requirements. Published guidance is commonly two to three weeks for uncomplicated cardiac cases; clearance after a long-haul Nairobi–Hyderabad flight is an individual clinical decision. Do not book a fixed return date from a general timeline.

What documents should I prepare before contacting a hospital?

Passport with adequate validity, recent photographs, consultation notes and discharge summaries, imaging files or discs with written reports, recent blood tests and ECG or echocardiogram where relevant, a current medicines list and a referral letter if you have one. Share copies first; originals only when asked.
